In the February 2017 state assembly elections in Goa, some ministers allegedly lost their assembly seat, because they indulged in land grabbing, forcing vulnerable people to sell their property cheaply as real estate remains the most preferred asset of people in India. Most of the land grabbing incidents were not reported in the mainstream media in Goa when they took place, only after the elections, the newspapers mentioned that the ministers, their relatives and associates were involved in land grabbing, leading to widespread resentment and anger.
Only one incident where a ministers son tried to harass a poor family to vacate some land in Pernem, which he wanted for a hotel. leading to the suicide of the husband, received some media coverage as the wife and children were in a very poor condition.
No one reports the large scale land grabbing which is taking place, it has become a very lucrative racket, especially for powerful officials and politicians
